JONATHAN BUCKLEY
GMG Single Image of the Year 2007

Jonathan has specialised in garden and plant photography for about 12 years. His work has been widely published in books, magazines and newspapers.

Jonathan was awarded the title ‘Garden Writers Guild Photographer of the Year’ and ‘Features Photographer of the Year’ in 2006.

He lives in Gloucestershire with his wife, two boys and two border terriers.

TORIE CHUGG
Torie. has been a freelance garden photographer for several years now working for magazines such as Gardeners World, The English Garden, Country Homes and Interiors, Country Living and recently Gardens Illustrated. She has also had pictures published in a wide range of newspapers and books. Her work has been featured in a wide variety of publications from a Monty Don Book to a Japanese magazine.

After university, Torie assisted photographers in London and then travelled for six months with her boyfriend, Simon, who is now her husband. When returning to England she assisted as a freelancer for another year gaining a wider studio knowledge from several photographers. Torie then started assisting garden photographer Andrew Lawson and realised that she had found what she wanted to do. She has been a freelance garden photographer ever since.

Torie lives in Gloucestershire and when she’s not photographing gardens and plants, she and Simon spend their leisure time surfing in Devon.

LIZ EDDISON
After leaving Harrow School of Art, Liz went on to work in the photographic department of Sotheby Auctioneers and then for Advertising photographer Bob Wallis as Assistant and Stylist - for some years following this she became a Photographers agent.

Frustrated with being on the business side of Photography and not behind the lens, she combined her passion for gardening with photography alongside freelance picture research. Her photographs are published internationally in books and magazines and she is a co-founder of The Garden Collection.

MICHELLE GARRETT
GMG Features Photographer of the Year 2007

Michelle loves to travel and be the observer. As a freelancer, she specializes in gardens, flowers, plants, lifestyle, food, craft and travel, bringing a sensitive and lightness of touch to every image. She has a passion for capturing mood, colour and beauty, Apart from the many books she has contributed to, her work regularly appears in Homes and Garden Magazine. Country Living Magazine, BBC Homes & Antiques, The English Garden, BBC Good Food Magazine and others.

She was born in Australia and now lives in London.

DEREK HARRIS
Derek Harris is an Internationally recognised, and award winning Flower, Garden and Landscape photographer. His work appears in books, magazines, calendars, stationary, and Limited and Open Edition Prints.
His photography is creative and based on his art and design training. First attracted by the spontaneity of photography and the beauty, colours and magic of Nature, he tries to capture it all with his camera to share with others.

He has been an award winner many times over, including, for his photography and design, winning 'Photographic Greeting Card of the Year' for two years running. The Garden Writers Guild 'Garden Photograph of the Year' and the Garden Photographers Association 'Photographers Choice Picture of the Year'.

Derek Harris's work has been exclusively used in 10 books including the best selling 'Monet at Giverny' (173,000 copies), the acclaimed 'Westonbirt- Celebration of the Seasons' and the award winning book 'Cornwall's Great Gardens'.

His series of high quality Studio Flower Portraits have been awarded four Royal Horticultural Society's Gold Medals in 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2006. The pictures produced as Limited Edition Collectors Prints are in private collections in the UK, Europe, USA, Canada and Australia.

He lives in Linconshire with his partner Judy.

JACKY HOBBS

Jacky is a Creative freelance writer, stylist and photographer, working in close partnership with Michelle Garrett to devise and produce garden, lifestyle, travel and food features for a wide variety of magazines, corporate brochures, websites and books, including her own title- Floral Gifts.

Qualifications include The R.H.S. General and Advanced Certificates in Horticulture, and she is also a non-executive director of RHS Enterprises (2001-2007).

Jacky lives in London with her twin daughters.

ANDREW LAWSON
GMG Garden Photographer of the Year 2007

A keen gardener himself, Andrew Lawson brings a specialist eye to the photography of plants and gardens. He also brings a painter’s appreciation of colour, form and texture, and a meticulous eye for detail. He has built up a formidable botanical knowledge over the years and has become sought-after as a photographer by the leading gardeners and garden owners in Britain.

Over the years, his photographs of plants and gardens have appeared in numerous publications both at home and abroad. Amongst many titles, he has illustrated Rosemary’s Verey’s ‘Good Planting’ and ‘Planting Plans’, Roy Strong’s book ‘The Laskett’, ‘The Garden at Highgrove’ by HRH The Prince of Wales, The Elements of Organic Gardening by HRH The Prince of Wales and Stephen Lacey’s ‘Scent in Your Garden’. His own book, ‘The Gardeners’ Book of Colour’, was published by Frances Lincoln in 1996.

Married with two daughters, Andrew lives in Oxfordshire where his small walled garden, decorated with sculptures by his wife Briony, opens under the National Gardens Scheme.

MARIE O’HARA
Marie was brought up in East Africa and her parents bought her first camera, the famous little Kodak Box Brownie, as a birthday present. After art school, Marie started her career as a graphic designer and then moved into styling in all genres for photographers in London. This allowed her to travel extensively for many years. When she moved to Gloucestershire with her husband Tom, she achieved her ambition of having the time to pursue her love of photography. Surrounded by wonderful gardens, she quickly became hooked and her work has been published widely in books, greetings cards and calendars. Many clients book her for lifestyle shoots as her eye for detail and styling a natural look is well respected.

GARY ROGERS
German Photographer of the Year 2007

Gary travels extensively through Europe and America photographing every garden with an enthusiasm and energy envied by many.

Before embracing garden photography full time, Gary has been an award winning photographer working in many different areas from fashion, architecture, TV News stills, theatre and covering life style stories of well known stars and pop groups.

In 1999, he won ‘Features Photographer of the Year’ award from the Garden Writers Guild for the book ‘The Garden of Chatswoth’.

Based in, Germany, he is a major contributor to the German magazines ‘Shoner Wohnen, S/W Decoration, Hauser, and Living at Home. He also supplies to the major Garden book publishers in Great Britain and Germany
First published in Germany the recent titles published in the USA are.

"Design in the Garden " by Ursula Barth (David and Charles publishers), and “Garden Magic" by Gisela Keil.

Gary was born in New Zealand and is married, living in Hamburg, Germany with his wife Karen, a well known picture editor. They have two daughters, Jaana and Nadja, who are no strangers to Daddy’s cameras and packed bags.

  LISA SHALET
Wondering what on earth to do after finishing University, Lisa worked in the creative side of advertising and graphic design before realising that her talents lay with photography. Travel opportunities and constantly pestering her friends to photograph them enhanced her photography skills and knowledge, and she went freelance in 2002.

Initially, Lisa assisted a number of different photographers to gain a wide experience of different styles, from fashion through to wedding, social, corporate and still life. In particular, Lisa credits Michelle Garrett for teaching her about the beauty of natural light and how to capture it in a photograph. Having discovered that her strongest skills are in lifestyle photography, Lisa now concentrates on photographing people in their own environment and elements of that environment, capturing the essence of the person as they go about their daily activities.

Lisa’s work has been published in various magazines, newspapers and books, as well as a great many model portfolios. Her photographs of children can also be found adorning the walls of many a proud parent!

DEREK ST ROMAINE
Derek St Romaine is one of the UK's leading horticultural and gardening photographers. He trained as a graphic designer at Harrow School of Art and spent many years working as an art director in publishing. He switched over to photography in 1985 and specialized in food photography at his Chelsea studio before turning his attention to plant and garden photography.

He is married and lives and works in Surrey. He and his wife Dawn are passionate gardeners - their garden has appeared in many books and magazines worldwide. The garden is open for charity under the National Garden Scheme and is also in 'The Good Gardens Guide'.

Derek’s work is always in demand, and he supplies all the major gardening magazines and book publishers in the UK and many in Europe and America.

In 1993 and 1996 he won Garden Writers Guild awards for plant portrait and garden photography. In 1998 he was awarded a gold medal by The Royal Horticultural Society for an exhibition of Garden and Plant Photography. In 2001 and 2003 he was voted Garden Photographer of the Year at the Garden Writers Guilds awards scooping the top prize for photography. In 2005 he was awarded joint runner-up in the Annual GPA Exhibition, 'Features Category'. In 2006 he was runner up in the Royal Botanic Gardens 'Kew Category'.

JANE SEBIRE
Jane's photographic career began as a portrait photographer with commissions from amongst others, Life Magazine, and has her work in the collection at the National Portrait Gallery. After a series of portraits of garden designers for Gardens Illustrated, Jane became more interested in horticulture and completed the RHS Certificate. She then began shooting garden features around the UK and Europe and is a contributor to all of the major horticultural magazines.

Jane lives with her husband and son in the north of England.


NEIL SUTHERLAND
Neil Sutherland is an extremely versatile photographer shooting a number of different themes including gardening, lifestyle, architecture and animals. His extensive experience drawn from being principal photographer on over 140 books and contributor to many more as well as magazines, editorial and PR, enables him to offer a consistently impressive standard of work.

His clients appreciate the advantages of the service he offers including overall project management as well as sourcing props, locations and models. This often includes building the sets either in his studio, garden or on location. Recent gardening projects for example have included building ponds, numerous water features, decking and a Pergola.

Neil’s recent studio work has covered many different book themes including lifestyle, gardening, food, a children’s pet series. New books he has illustrated include ‘Growing Bonsai’ by Ken Norman and a mammoth book with 369 guitars’ The Illustrated Guide to Guitars’ by Nick Freeth.

NICOLA STOCKEN TOMKINS
Nicola both photographs and writes about lovely gardens, renowned gardeners and nurseries throughout the British Isles, specialising in features for magazines and newspapers throughout the world. Her work also appears in books, calendars and greetings cards.

Married with one son, in her spare time, she windsurfs, plays the piano and watches life go by on the River Thames where she lives.

STEVEN WOOSTER
Steven started his career in book design where he worked as an art director working on informational and coffee table books on a series of subjects from sports to interior design.

He began to photograph gardens after working on books with some of gardening's’ “big names” John Brookes, Beth Chatto, Anthony Paul and the late Christopher Lloyd.

Steven has concentrated solely on garden photography for a number of years, although more recently he has taken a course in garden design and he has a display garden at one of the UK’s major design schools. Currently he combines three careers of photography, book design, and garden design

He likes to escape to New Zealand most years for a month, away from London’s cold, wet and grey winters and to catch up with Kiwi life and hospitality.

He lives in London with his wife, son, daughter and five tree ferns, and most recently Otto, a Border Terrier puppy.

  MODESTE HERWIG
Modeste Herwig studied Dutch but could not resist following the footsteps of her father Rob Herwig and her grandfather Arend Jan Herwig. A love for plants and interest in garden architecture has always been present with her and she started gardening and taking pictures of plants when she was 15 years old. Her grandfather started writing about gardening, her father Rob Herwig is the world best seller author on gardening books with over 9 million copies sold. In Holland, Modeste is one of the best known garden photographers and garden writers
.
Modeste started with working for eight years in the model gardens of her father in Lunteren (Holland) and also gave some 300 lectures about gardening. She has produced 30 books on gardening and writes all the text and takes all the photographs.

Modeste travels a lot in Holland and abroad to photograph garden plants and new ideas on garden design. In 2008 the German translation of her book 'De familiemoestuin' (Kinderleicht, Familienspass im Garten) has been chosen "Bestes Deutsches Gartenbuch 2008" (Best German garden book) by the Deutsche Gartenbaugesellschaft.

She lives in Soest, Holland. In her spare time she likes working in her own garden and walking her border terrier Pippa.
